Movie Review: Getting to Know Joseph Smith, Translator of the Book of Mormon
The astounding performance of R. Dustin Harding in the lead role as Joseph Smith leaves audiences with the feeling that they know Joseph Smith on a personal level. This is a film that will endure for generations because it gives audiences the feeling that they were there and understand the events in an intimate and personal way.
Understanding history begins with understanding those who made history, and Plates of Gold provides that insight. People of all backgrounds and beliefs should view this film to gain a better understanding of Joseph Smith, his faith, dedication, compassion, and his personality.
Joseph Smith: Plates of Gold opened in Utah theaters to large, enthusiastic audiences on September 2 after a debut in Europe to sell-out crowds at showings in several countries. The large audiences during the opening weekend mean it will continue to remain in theaters and expand beyond Utah to California, Idaho, Oregon, and other locations in the weeks ahead, according to the official web site at www.JosephMovie.com
The film shows the struggles and challenges of a teenager called on to perform a daunting task: translate ancient writings on metal plates into a book of scripture, and restore the Church of Jesus Christ as it was during the time Christ was on the earth.
The Book of Mormon was translated from ancient writings by Joseph Smith in the 1820s when he was just a young man, and in April 1830 he officially started The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which is now the fourth largest church in the U.S. More than 150 million copies of the Book of Mormon have been published in over 100 languages.
There are now roughly 14 million Mormons in the world, with about half of them in the United States. Mormons got that nick name because they believe in the Bible as well as additional scripture known as the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ.
Joseph Smith was significant to the history of the United States, as well as significant to the millions of followers who regard him as a Prophet of God. The film does not focus on the details of history or religion, but instead enables viewers to see Joseph Smith, the man.
Joseph Smith was the target of persecution, and was under almost constant threat of attack from those who wanted to steal the gold plates for their monetary value. He faced what must have seemed to him and others to be impossible challenges, but through faith, prayer, dedication, and loyalty he was able to succeed.
Far from perfect, the film shows Joseph Smith and his mistakes as well as his triumphs. Each mistake turned out to be an opportunity to learn and become better, rather than quit and give up. His determination to succeed in spite of what seemed to be insurmountable odds can be an inspiration to Mormons and non-Mormons alike.
Director Christian Vuissa (The Errand of Angels, One Good Man), was able to bring a highly professional production to the screen with the look and quality of the best films out today in spite of his low budget. Vuissa selected a great cast and inspired them to bring out superb, believable performances.
R. Dustin Harding took on the role of Joseph Smith, and did so with expression and emotion that enabled the film to bring tremendous insight and understanding to the man millions call “The Prophet.” Harding did more than just perform. He obviously learned about Joseph Smith the man, and was able to react and behave in every way as if he were Joseph Smith. His performance was superb, and he has created a masterpiece that will endure for many years to come.
There is much more to Joseph Smith´s life than was shown in this first film, labeled by the producer as Volume 1. The film ended with the publication of the Book of Mormon, but the story of Joseph Smith continues with more persecution, constant and sometimes violent opposition, prison, and a martyr´s death. The first thought that comes to mind after viewing Plates of Gold is, “I can´t wait to see what comes next.”
